Do I need to become a veggie if I go for Ayurveda? Isn’t it expensive? How can I find time in my busy schedule for an Ayurvedic treatment? Etc. For some people, Ayurveda is an Old system that existed hundreds of years ago and is impossible to incorporate it in today's fast life. For some others, it is part of a rich tradition and culture which we embrace in our mind with great emotions. Between these two concepts, many are confused about the reality. Of course, Practices may go old but concepts could never be. It was part of a rich culture since it evolved in India, but never restricted to that and the concepts could be globalized in any era.
Ayurveda could be part of our life beyond the barriers of age, sex, ethnicity etc and for that, it is not mandatory to get admitted to a hospital and take expensive treatment. Concepts of Ayurveda can be part of your lifestyle as healthy habits, a life abiding by the law of nature. It is also about protecting our body from diseases along with treating diseases by reviving a tradition of preventive health strategy. We are always ready to wait for long hours in hospitals and spend money on expensive treatments but reluctant to invest a few minutes daily to prevent these diseases.
My intention is to let you know what Ayurveda is and how you can absorb the beautiful concepts of Ayurveda in your day to day life. Let us have a tour through the world of Ayurveda in the coming days holding hand in hand. However, the myths and prejudices pertaining to the Ayurveda system of medicine precede the actual facts. Many ideas about Ayurveda in the common man’s mind are far from reality. First, let’s flash a light into a few of them before we go deep into this vast ocean of Ayurveda. I expect all of you to be with me on this voyage.
I'm Dr. Divya P currently working as Assistant Professor in Muniyal Institute of Ayurveda Medical Sciences. Ayurveda has always been my profession and passion and everything related to Ayurveda makes me curious. Even though I am trained in making Ayurvedic medicines, as a clinician I am interested in the preventive aspects of Ayurveda and using its principles in leading a healthy disease free life.

Agni karma means the application of Agni or heat directly or indirectly to the affected part with the help of different materials to save the patient from a disease or complication. Agnikarma holds a special place in surgery by Sushruta as it is believed that a disease once treated by Agnikarma does not recur and does not get infected easily.
The word Agnikarma is made up of two words i.e., Agni and Karma. Agni, the masculine word derived from the root “agigatau agyati agnayamna prapyanti”. i. e. it gives the rebirth, is utilized to cure and prevent the diseases. Agni is the important one among the pancha mahabhutas.
The Agni, in the form of bhootagni, jatharagni and dhatwagni is the life for the creatures. The procedure that involves the Agni directly or indirectly is considered under Agnikarma. The Agnikarma is also known by different names like Dahanakarma, dahakarma, dagdhakarma, jalanakarma and pachanakarma, finds its role in the vataja and Kaphaja vyadhi involving the dhatu that are predominant with pruthvi and ap mahabhutha. Mere utilization of Agnikarma, which is counted in anushastra, upayantra and shashti upakrama, provides Shalyatantra the unique position among the eight faculties of Ayurveda.
Agnikarma can be utilized – As a preventive measure, as the curative measure, as a postoperative procedure, and as a hemostatic measure.

Right from the time of birth anyone who is healthy and fit can be applied with Oil Massage. The unfit group includes those who have some infections-skin, respiratory or systemic, who have undergone purification therapies like Vamana, virechana etc and whose food has not been properly digested.
How to do it?
A person can do Oil massage daily by himself or herself or by seeking help from a trained masseur. Starting right from the vertex of the head, both ears, face, palms and soles whole body has to be applied with suitable Lukewarm medicated oil and massaged in the direction of hair over the body and in round direction over joints. It has to be continued preferably up to 25-30 minutes, after which the Oil is washed off during hot water bath using medicated soap.
How to select Oil?
Ayurveda has given a cocktail of medicated Oils and Ghee to choose from. A selection has to be done on the basis of need and medical condition. In my experience, Mahanarayana Taila, Chandanaadi taila, Karpooradi Taila, Eladi Taila, Lakshadi taila etc are found to be good in their aroma which can be used for daily use whereas Pinda Taila, Dhanwantharam Kuzhambu, Murivenna, Kottamchukkadi Taila etc are mostly known for their therapeutic efficacy.
Abhyanga or Oil massage is an age-old technique followed by kings, warriors, fighters or those who follow strenuous works to relieve them of their daily stress-both physical and mental. Modern life is not much different from a small warzone where the stress is more to the psychological side. Ayurveda recommends Abhyanga as a must-to-do daily regimen to maintain health. It is also seen advised in various neurological, muscular and skeletal disorders as preparatory and sometimes as the main treatment method.

]]>In Ayurveda, compound formulations are divided into two groups.
1)Kastha ausadhi (herbal)
2) Rasa ausadhi (Herbo-mineral).
Pharmacy is the science and art-concerned with collection, preparation, preservation, and standardization of drugs. The word pharmacy thus derives from a Greek word 'PHARMAKON' meaning 'A DRUG' which is in the classic term used to describe the art of the pharmacist. It is based upon the knowledge of various subjects, applied for administration.
So, Importance of this branch is very clear as - 1) applicability and 2) richness of quality, abundance, and utility in multi-purpose are said to be the best qualities of a drug. Hence, Bhaisaja is kept in the second position among the padacatustayam because of its great role in treatment.
Pancavidha Kasaya Kalpana (swarasa, Kalka, Kwath, Hima, & Phanta) constitute the basic preparation of Bhaishjya Kalpana. The basic processing techniques of Bhaishjya Kalpana are elaborately explained in the samhitas. All kalpanas are mainly based on water contents or water-soluble part.
Since the pancavidha kasaya kalpanas has a short duration of expiry, the formulation which can be preserved for long-term and can be administered conveniently was mentioned in samhitas, as curna, vati, leha, sneha, sandhana etc.
Sneha kalpana is one among the several highly established kalpanas of Ayurvedic system of medicine. The main advantage of oily preparation is, the extraction of both fat soluble and water soluble active principles of plants and minerals. Oily preparations include not only the oral preparation but those intended for topical application also. The oily preparations for the topical application have the potential to diffuse locally into the soft tissues.
Our generation today is going through a stressful phase. A daily routine is absolutely necessary to bring radical change in the body. A strict daily routine helps to establish balance in one's constitution. It also regularizes a person's biological clock, aids digestion, absorption, assimilation, and longevity. Ayurveda prescribes for each individual a specific daily routine. A daily routine is known as DINACHARYA in Ayurveda. Among them, application of oil to head and body plays a major role. Nowadays everyone is having hectic and busy schedules including children’s and adult, which result in stressful life & facing problems like disturbed sleep etc.
As we had a tradition of oil bath in India, even nowadays its followed in some villages, a majority has become a part of city life we forgot about our old traditions due to lack of time and busy schedules. As per Ayurveda references application of oil to body and scalp is a part of daily regimens. Even though there is lack of time, if we spare daily at least 10 to 15 minutes for oil application and massaging before a bath in morning will make wonderful changes in the body. At least one can try to have oil bath weekly once will benefit much.
It is one of the main ways that Ayurveda keeps us promotes health, prevents premature aging - Addresses fatigue - Prevents joint diseases, increase circulation - Improves vision - Provides compact body - Induces normal sleep - Increases complexion and luster of the skin
Selection of medicated oil should be done on the basis of body constitution and seasons.
Mainly there is three category of medicated oil available in the market like thailam or enna (indicates prepared with sesame oil), keram or velichenna ( indicates prepared with coconut oil), kuzhumbu (indicates prepared with a combination of more than one oil).
List of some tailas available in market

Today man has achieved high peaks in the field of medicine with the development of various technology and research. However, Ayurveda still holds a high profile in serving man-kind to mitigate the sufferings - be it physical, mental or spiritual.
The pondering mind of our Acharyas, considering the multitude nature of the herbal resources and multifactorial nature of the disease – envisaged multiple Kalpanas – i.e. to suit the person, disease, Kala or the Satmya in overall. Ayurveda can be concise and understood in “Trisutra” i.e. Hetu, Linga and Aushadha from which Aushadha means Bhaishaja -
The importance of Bhaishaja is mentioned under the heading of“ChikitsaChatuspada”
Among, “AnekavidhaKalpana” of Bhaishaja the five basic Kalpanas (swarasa, Kalka, Kwath, Hima & Phanta) have their own importance. Since these basic Kalpanas have short shelf life several Upakalpanas came into existence for e.g. AvalehaKalpana, SandhanaKalpana, Sneha Kalpanas etc.

There are various types of medicines and diets available in the market to counter obesity, but most of them are really ineffective or contain various chemicals that may be harmful to health. The Ayurvedic approach to losing weight provides an alternative that is holistic and natural.
Ayurveda and Obesity
The basic tenet of Ayurveda is maintaining the balance of three Doshas (namely, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Ayurveda believes that an imbalance of Dosha is responsible for the health-related problems. The Kapha Dosha shares a number of characteristics with obesity or excess weight such as being smooth, slow, oily, gross, soft, cool, stable, dense, and heavy.
This correlation indicates that being obese may cause an increase in Kapha, or vice versa. The Ayurvedic approach for losing weight is by creating the balance in Dosha. To curtail the excess weight or the excess Kapha, a person should be mobile, rough, subtle, hot, liquid, dry, sharp, and light.
Ayurvedic Weight Loss Treatment
The Ayurvedic method of losing weight consists of following practices:
Yoga and Exercises
Yoga is beneficial in creating a mental and emotional balance. The various benefits of daily morning yoga are:
The Kapha pacifying yoga asanas can be included in the daily routine for better results. In addition to daily 15 mins yoga schedule, an exercise schedule of at least three days a week should be included in the daily schedule. The exercise duration should be a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes. The HIIT or High-Intensity Interval Training can opt since it takes a short time, but it is beneficial for losing weight. The timing for yoga and exercising should be during 6 to 10 am/pm to pacify Kapha.
Daily diet
The division of the daily meal in three satisfying parts with lunch being the main meal and dinner being the lightest one promotes weight loss. There should be no snacking in between the meals, and there should be a gap of four hours between the two meals. The three satisfying and fulfilling meals help in avoiding bingeing on snacks in-between the meals, and promotes a healthy and strong Agni.
A Kapha pacifying diet is essential in clearing the excess Kapha, reducing the weight, leading to overall good health. The food should be fresh, easily digestible and appropriate to the season. It should exhibit characteristics like rough, warm, light and dry.
Meal Timing
Lunch is the main meal since the Agni is most prominent during 11 am and 2 pm that makes complete digestion of the food easily. The dinner should be taken between 5 to 6 pm, eating after 7 pm should be avoided, so that the food is digested before the bedtime and body can properly detoxify, when you sleep.
All these activities and changes need to be incorporated into the daily schedule. This regular daily routine facilitates de-stressing, restoration of Dosha balance and overall good health. The Ayurvedic approach to weight loss doesn't ask a person to stay hungry, on the contrary, it requires the meal to be satisfying. It helps not only in losing weight, but it also promotes overall good health and wellbeing.
